Chris plays bass. Low notes are his favourite.
Raised in rural Southwestern Ontario, Chris Benton recently graduated from the University of Toronto’s Undergraduate Jazz Performance Program. After moving to Toronto in 2006, he began studying with a number of leading Canadian bassists including Jim Vivian, Rich Brown and Dave Young.
A graduate of the 2010 Banff Centre for the Arts Workshop in Jazz and Creative Music, Chris regularly works with a variety of Toronto-based ensembles in addition to his own group, The Chris Benton Trio. These include: Blunt Object, Sony recording artist Mookie and the Loyalists, the Mike Butlin Band and the Ian Sinclair Trio, among others. In addition to working as a freelance musician, Chris also works as an educator. He currently teaches privately throughout the GTA and holds the individual bass instructor position at Mayfield Secondary School for the Arts in Brampton.
The Chris Benton Trio combines elements of the traditional jazz piano trio with contemporary styles of music. The Trio has enjoyed two Canada-wide tours, and will be releasing their second album in Spring 2013. Formed in 2011, the Trio also features Oswald Hazelton on piano and Juno Award winning drummer Elvin Jones.
